A billionaire bridge owner might have whispered in the wrong ear before Donald Trump threatened to delay the Gordie Howe International Bridge opening. This relates directly to trump donor bridge meeting developments across the country. Democrats in Congress aren’t buying the timing as coincidence.
Matthew Moroun controls the competing Ambassador Bridge between Windsor and Detroit. This relates directly to trump donor bridge meeting developments across the country. He reportedly met with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on February 9. Hours later, Trump posted his social media threat demanding concessions from Canada over the new bridge project.

The Money Trail Gets Messy: Trump Donor Bridge Meeting Impact
“It appears that you may have used your influence as a donor to President Donald Trump to jeopardize American commerce to protect your company’s bottom line,” wrote ranking member Rep. Robert Garcia of California and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan in their letter to Moroun Wednesday.
The numbers tell a story. Moroun’s pumped over $600,000 into Trump’s campaigns and Republican coffers since 2019. His company also spent $2.5 million lobbying Trump’s first administration on bridge issues. Plus another $250,000 since Trump returned to office. That’s serious lobbying cash for someone whose family business directly competes with the Gordie Howe bridge.
“President Trump’s wealthy donors should not be holding secret meetings with administration officials to influence economic and foreign policies that have real impacts on the American people.”
The Moroun Family’s Long War
This isn’t Matthew Moroun’s first rodeo trying to kill the Gordie Howe project. His late father Manuel fought the new crossing for years before dying in 2020. He knew full well it’d eat into Ambassador Bridge toll revenue. Related: Finland stuns Switzerland in OT thriller, reaches semis
Back in 2012, the Morouns threw $30 million at advertising and lobbying for a ballot measure that would’ve forced the Gordie Howe bridge through a statewide referendum. Voters said no. The family also launched multiple lawsuits and trade disputes. All unsuccessful.
Now it looks like Matthew might be trying a different approach.
Instead of fighting in courts or at ballot boxes, why not just chat with the Commerce Secretary?
The Revolving Door Problem
Here’s where things get interesting. The lobbying firm Moroun hired, Ballard Partners, previously employed current White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Bondi actually filed paperwork in 2021 to lobby for Moroun’s Detroit International Bridge Company while working at Ballard. The filing notes she’d served as Trump’s special adviser in the White House Counsel’s Office from 2019 to 2020.
Talk about knowing who to call.
Democrats Want Documents
Garcia and his colleagues aren’t just making noise. They’ve given Lutnick until February 25 to hand over documents about his meeting with Moroun. Plus any communications about both bridges and Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Moroun faces a March 4 deadline to provide his side of the story.
The Detroit International Bridge Company hasn’t returned calls for comment.
Neither has Lutnick’s office.
What This Means for Cross-Border Trade
The Gordie Howe bridge project represents a major expansion of commercial capacity in one of North America’s busiest trade corridors. Canada and Michigan struck a joint ownership deal specifically to boost cross-border commerce.
But if a private bridge owner can influence presidential threats over infrastructure projects through campaign donations and insider meetings? That’s a problem bigger than just one bridge.
The reality is, this investigation could expose how easily big donors can potentially sway foreign policy decisions that affect millions of people and billions in trade.
Keep an eye on those March deadlines. If Moroun and Lutnick actually provide the requested documents, we might learn just how much influence $600,000 in campaign donations can buy.
