Lakefield Weather
Alright folks, bundle up if you’re heading out tonight. We’ve got a classic April cold snap settling over the Kawarthas, and it’s going to be a chilly one.
Right now we’re sitting at -3°C in Peterborough with that northwest wind making it feel like -9°C. That’s jacket weather, not hoodie weather. The overcast deck is starting to break apart as this high pressure system pushes through, and we’ll see clearing skies through the overnight hours.
Tonight into Wednesday Morning
Here’s where it gets interesting. As those clouds clear out, we’re losing our blanket, and temperatures are going to drop like a rock. I’m tracking lows down to -7°C by dawn, which is pretty typical for early April but still means frost warnings for anyone with plants or gardens.
The good news? Those winds are going to die right down to nearly calm by morning, so the bitter wind chill we’re feeling now won’t be an issue. But radiational cooling under clear skies is going to make for a proper cold start to Wednesday.
Wednesday’s Turnaround
This is why I love spring weather. By Wednesday afternoon, we’re looking at a complete flip. That same high pressure bringing us the cold tonight will give us gorgeous sunshine and temperatures climbing to 4°C. It’s going to feel like a different season compared to this evening.
Perfect timing for the afternoon commute. Morning drivers will need the ice scraper one more time, but by lunch hour you might catch yourself thinking about patios again.
The Pattern Shift
Now here’s where the models get really interesting. The GFS and Euro are both showing a significant pattern change for Thursday and Friday. We’ve got a low pressure system tracking up from the Ohio Valley that’s going to bring our first real spring warm-up.
Thursday’s looking at 13°C with some light rain, and Friday could see proper soaking with over a centimetre of rain possible. That’s exactly what we need to get things greening up, but it might make for messy driving conditions, especially Friday morning.
Practical Stuff
For tonight and Wednesday morning: dress in layers and don’t put the winter gear away just yet. Wednesday’s commute will start icy but end pleasant. If you’ve got outdoor plans for Wednesday afternoon, go for it – just give things time to warm up first.
Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, that rain system is going to be slow-moving, so keep the umbrella handy and maybe hold off on any major outdoor projects until the weekend. Saturday’s looking decent again with temperatures back near 9°C and mainly dry conditions.
Bottom line: typical April rollercoaster weather, but nothing severe on the horizon. Just dress for the day you’re in, not the day you want it to be.
