Folks, we’ve got a tale of two zones across Northern Ontario tonight, and if you’re heading out after 9 PM, you need to know which side of this divide you’re on.

Right now, there’s a messy freezing rain event hitting the Sudbury-North Bay corridor that’s making roads absolutely treacherous. I’m seeing visibility down to just 2 kilometres in Sudbury with that glaze building up on everything. If you’re driving Highway 17 between these centres tonight, please don’t. Seriously. Those temperatures hovering right at the freezing mark with steady precipitation are creating textbook ice storm conditions.

But here’s the interesting part – step west toward Thunder Bay and Kenora, and it’s a completely different story. Clear skies and relatively mild conditions out there, though that visibility drop in Kenora to 2 km suggests some patchy fog rolling in.

The Overnight Story

The freezing rain will taper off after midnight as that system pushes east, but then we’re looking at a classic April radiation cooling night. Temperatures are going to crash hard under those clearing skies – we’re talking about a 15-degree drop from 9 PM to 6 AM across much of the region.

By Wednesday morning, anyone who got that freezing rain tonight will wake up to a skating rink. The combination of ice pellets and that hard freeze means your driveway, walkways, and vehicle are going to need serious attention. Start your car early and let it warm up – you’ll need time to properly clear everything.

Wednesday’s Twist

Here’s where it gets interesting from a weather nerd perspective. Wednesday morning starts brutal cold – we’re talking minus-16 in some spots – but then a warm air mass starts pushing in from the south. The GFS and Euro models are in pretty good agreement on this temperature swing.

But watch for fog development Wednesday morning, especially in the valleys around Timmins and Kapuskasing. When you get this kind of temperature differential with moisture in the air, visibility can drop to near zero in minutes.

The Rest of the Week

Thursday’s where things get active again. We’ve got a legitimate rain event coming – over 5 millimetres expected – and with temperatures finally climbing above freezing during the day, we’re looking at some decent melting action. This is great news for anyone tired of dealing with ice, but it means puddles and potentially some minor flooding in low-lying areas.

And then – because this is April in Northern Ontario and mother nature has a sense of humour – we’re tracking a snow event for Sunday. Yeah, you read that right. After getting up to 12 degrees on Sunday, we could see nearly 3 centimetres of snow. The long-range models have been consistent on this for three days now, so I’m taking it seriously.

What You Need to Know

Tonight: Stay home if you can, especially between Sudbury and North Bay. If you absolutely must drive, keep a winter survival kit in your car and let someone know your route.

Tomorrow morning: Give yourself extra time. Lots of extra time. Ice scraping, car warming, and slow driving are all part of the Wednesday commute reality.

The weekend: Don’t put away the winter gear just yet. That Sunday snow could be a real travel disruptor, and with 27 km/h winds in the forecast, we might be looking at some blowing snow conditions too.
