✍️ The forecast · Daily Current Weather Desk

Alright night shift workers and early risers, it’s a chilly start to your Thursday morning out there. We’re sitting at 2°C right now, which means frost is definitely possible in the usual spots – those low-lying areas and open fields around Kitchener-Waterloo are going to be slick if you’re heading out before sunrise.

The good news? This cold snap won’t last long.

By this afternoon, we’re climbing to a very respectable 17°C – that’s actually above normal for early April. But here’s the catch: it comes with some light drizzle and gusty winds hitting 32 km/h. The NAM model is showing this system moving through pretty quickly, so don’t expect anything heavy. Just enough to make the roads a bit greasy, especially mixed with all the sand and salt still hanging around from winter.

Friday’s Reality Check

Friday is where things get interesting, and not in a good way. We’re looking at a legitimate soaking with 14mm of rain and temperatures dropping back to just 8°C. The HRDPS is showing this low pressure system really digging in, and I’ve been watching it develop over the Prairies for days now.

This is April weather at its most frustrating – one day you’re thinking about shorts, the next you’re back to searching for your winter jacket. And with 70% rain chances, Friday’s commute is going to be a slog. Give yourself extra time, especially on the 401 through Kitchener where visibility always drops when it’s raining hard.

Weekend Recovery

Saturday looks like the pick of the weekend. We’ll dry out nicely with partly cloudy skies and a high around 10°C. Perfect for getting outside after Friday’s washout, though you’ll still want layers – that overnight low near freezing means frost is back on the table for Sunday morning.

Sunday brings another round of unsettled weather with gusty winds cranking up to 39 km/h. The Euro model is showing this as another quick-moving system, so it’s more nuisance than nightmare.

The Practical Stuff

For Thursday’s commute: dress in layers because that 15-degree temperature swing is no joke. Light rain gear might not be a bad idea for the afternoon. Friday? Full rain gear, slower driving, and maybe work from home if you can swing it.

And yes, I know it’s April and we’re all done with this temperature rollercoaster. But this is classic southwestern Ontario spring – we get teased with warmth, then reality smacks us back down. The pattern looks like it might settle into something more stable by next week, but for now, just roll with the punches and keep that weather app handy.
