✍️ The forecast · Daily Current Weather Desk

Alright folks, we’ve got a proper April tease happening across Hamilton and Niagara tonight. We’re sitting right at the freezing mark with overcast skies, and I won’t lie to you – it feels colder than the thermometer shows thanks to those northwest winds.

If you’re heading out right now, bundle up. Those “feels like” temperatures are hitting minus 6 in Niagara Falls and minus 5 in Fort Erie. The wind’s not brutal at 10-15 km/h, but it’s enough to cut right through you on a night like this.

The Overnight Story

Here’s where it gets interesting. We’re going to see a classic April overnight cooling pattern, with temperatures sliding down to around minus 3 by dawn. But check this out – the winds are going to die right off after midnight, dropping to just 3 km/h by 3 AM. That’s when we’ll see some clearing too.

The GFS and ECMWF are both showing this high pressure ridge building in from the west, which explains the wind shift and clearing skies. No precipitation expected, so at least we don’t have to worry about any sneaky frost on the windshields turning into ice.

Wednesday’s Turnaround

Now this is where I get excited about the data. We’re looking at a complete flip-flop tomorrow. Morning starts cold – minus 4 in the outlying areas – but by afternoon? We’re talking 8 to 9 degrees with sunshine breaking through.

The wind shifts southeast through the morning, and that’s our ticket to warmer air. It’s textbook spring weather pattern stuff. By 3 PM, you’ll be questioning whether you need that winter coat.

Looking Ahead

Thursday’s where things get spicy. The models are showing a low pressure system tracking up from the Ohio Valley, and it’s going to bring some serious temperature swings. We could hit 16 degrees, but watch out for that wind – 38 km/h with light drizzle developing.

Friday’s the big story though. Both the NAM and Euro are showing a solid soaking with over 20mm of rain possible. Perfect timing if you’re planning any weekend yard work – mother nature’s doing the watering for you.

The Commute

Wednesday morning’s going to be chilly but dry. Give yourself an extra couple minutes to scrape any frost, especially if you’re parked outside. The QEW and 403 should be fine – no weather concerns there.

Thursday morning’s drive will be warmer but watch for that drizzle starting mid-day. By Friday, keep the umbrella handy and maybe avoid the Skyway if you don’t like driving in steady rain.

And yes, I’ll be tracking that weekend system obsessively. Spring in the Golden Horseshoe never disappoints when it comes to keeping weather nerds like me busy. Bundle up tonight, but get ready for a taste of what’s coming this season.
