✍️ The forecast · Daily Current Weather Desk

Folks, we’re dealing with a classic April night where old man winter just won’t let go. Right now at 9:15 PM, we’ve got temperatures sitting between -2°C and -4°C across Durham and York, but those northwest winds at 15-20 km/h are making it feel like -7°C to -10°C. If you’re heading out tonight, bundle up like it’s February.

The good news? Those winds are going to calm down significantly overnight. We’re looking at a textbook radiational cooling setup as skies clear out completely. Winds will drop to just 3-4 km/h by dawn, which means we’re going to see some serious heat loss to space tonight.

Tonight Into Wednesday Morning

Here’s what I’m tracking: temperatures will bottom out around -5°C to -7°C by 6 AM Wednesday, with the coldest spots up in Newmarket and Georgina where we might even touch -8°C. That’s our seasonal low, and honestly, it’s about 5 degrees below normal for early April.

The HRDPS is showing clear skies persisting through the night, which means excellent radiational cooling conditions. No clouds to act as a blanket, folks. If you’ve got sensitive plants or just started your garden prep, tonight’s the night to cover them up.

Wednesday’s Turnaround

But here’s where it gets interesting. Wednesday morning starts brutal cold, but by afternoon we’re climbing to 4°C to 5°C with wall-to-wall sunshine. The winds shift southeast, pumping in slightly milder air, and we’ll see a decent temperature recovery. Still below normal, but hey, it’s progress.

Wednesday night into Thursday is where the pattern shifts. The GFS and Euro are in good agreement on a low pressure system approaching from the southwest. We’re looking at increasing clouds Thursday with light drizzle developing, and temperatures finally getting back into double digits with a high around 12°C.

The Rest of the Week

Friday’s the day to watch. Both major models are showing a more significant weather maker rolling through with moderate rain and about 15mm expected. Temperatures will be cooler again, back down to 6°C, but at least we’re staying above freezing.

The weekend looks mixed. Saturday dries out with partly cloudy skies and a more reasonable 9°C, then Sunday brings another chance of light rain as we settle into a typical April pattern of unsettled weather.

What This Means for You

Tonight and Wednesday morning: dress like it’s late February. We’re talking winter coats, gloves, the works. Your car’s going to need a good warm-up, and if you’re commuting early Wednesday, watch for potential frost on windshields and bridges.

The 401 and 407 will see the coldest temperatures, especially through the Whitby to Oshawa stretch where lake influence is minimal. Highway 9 through Aurora and Newmarket could see some patchy frost by dawn.

School bus parents: make sure the kids are bundled up Wednesday morning. Waiting at the bus stop in -5°C with even light winds is no joke.

And yes, I know it’s April 8th. I know we should be talking about spring jackets and morning jogs in shorts. Mother nature didn’t get the memo. This cold snap should break by Thursday, but until then, winter’s still got its claws in us.
