✍️ The forecast · Daily Current Weather Desk

Well folks, we’re looking at a classic April cold snap tonight, and I won’t sugarcoat it – it’s feeling pretty raw out there right now. Those wind chills are biting at 6-7 degrees below zero across most of the region, with Cornwall getting the worst of it. If you’re heading out for any late-night errands, bundle up like it’s February.

The good news? This overcast deck is starting to break up, and we’re going to see clearing skies as we head into the overnight hours. That means two things: first, you’ll actually see some stars for a change. Second, it’s going to get cold. Really cold.

Tonight Into Wednesday Morning

Here’s where it gets interesting from a meteorological standpoint. We’ve got radiational cooling setting up perfectly – clear skies, light winds dropping to almost nothing by dawn, and dry air mass. I’m tracking lows down to -5°C to -6°C region-wide by Wednesday morning, which puts us about 8-10 degrees below normal for early April.

For you early commuters, expect frost on the windshield and potentially some slick spots where any residual moisture from yesterday’s system might have lingered. The 401 corridor should be fine, but watch those rural roads and bridge decks between 5-8 AM.

Wednesday’s Recovery

But here’s the beauty of spring weather – it doesn’t stay cold for long. Once that sun gets working Wednesday morning, we’re looking at a gorgeous day. Temperatures will rocket from that frigid start to a pleasant 3°C by afternoon under brilliant sunshine.

The wind does pick up a bit through the day, gusting to around 17 km/h from the southwest, but that’s actually helping to mix the atmosphere and warm us up faster. Perfect day for getting outside if you can handle the morning chill.

The Pattern Shift

Now here’s where my weather nerd brain gets excited. The GFS and Euro models are in rare agreement about what’s coming Thursday into Friday – a significant pattern change. We’re going from this Arctic air mass to a much more active, mild Pacific flow.

Thursday brings our first taste of spring warmth with highs pushing 11°C, but it comes with a price. A low pressure system tracking up from the Great Lakes is going to bring some decent rainfall Thursday night into Friday. We’re looking at 10-15mm total, which is actually welcome news for anyone thinking about lawn care.

Friday stays unsettled with more showers and cooler temperatures around 7°C. Not great for outdoor plans, but honestly, we need the moisture.

Weekend Outlook

The weekend’s looking mixed but generally pleasant. Saturday should be the pick of the two days – partly cloudy skies and temperatures climbing back toward 8°C. Sunday brings another weak system through with some light showers possible, but nothing too dramatic.

Bottom Line

Tonight’s the last hurrah for winter. Dig out those heavy jackets one more time, because by Thursday we’ll be talking about spring jackets again. And yes, I’ll be up at 2 AM checking radar – this is what we weather nerds live for.

If you’re planning any outdoor activities this week, Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday is your best bet. After that, keep the umbrella handy through the weekend.
